RISE AND SHINE
Exploring the Hope that is the Resurrection
Matthew 28, Mark 16, Luke 24, John 20
March 4, 2007
I. Resurrection was Foretold by the prophets
Psalm 16:10 "because you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One see decay."
Acts 13:34 "The fact that God raised him from the dead, never to decay, is stated in these words:
" 'I will give you the holy and sure blessings promised to David." (Isaiah 55:3)
Isaiah 26:19 "But your dead will live;
their bodies will rise.
You who dwell in the dust,
wake up and shout for joy.
Your dew is like the dew of the morning;
the earth will give birth to her dead."
II. Foretold by Christ Himself
Mark 9:9 "As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus gave them orders not to tell anyone what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead."
Mark 14:28 "But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee."
John 2:19-22 "Jesus answered them, "Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days."
The Jews replied, "It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?" But the temple he had spoken of was his body. After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the Scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken."
Was Necessary:
A. To fulfill scripture
Luke 24:44-53 "He said to them, "This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms."
Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. He told them, "This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high."
When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God."
B. For forgiveness of sins
1 Corinthians 15:17 "And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins."
C. To provide hope and evidence
1 Corinthians 15:19 "If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are to be pitied more than all men."
III. Fraud would have been impossible
Matthew 27:63-66 "Sir," they said, "we remember that while he was still alive that deceiver said, 'After three days I will rise again.' So give the order for the tomb to be made secure until the third day. Otherwise, his disciples may come and steal the body and tell the people that he has been raised from the dead. This last deception will be worse than the first."
"Take a guard," Pilate answered. "Go, make the tomb as secure as you know how." So they went and made the tomb secure by putting a seal on the stone and posting the guard.
IV. Attested by: Angels, Apostles & Enemies
Matthew 28:11-15 "While the women were on their way, some of the guards went into the city and reported to the chief priests everything that had happened. When the chief priests had met with the elders and devised a plan, they gave the soldiers a large sum of money, telling them, "You are to say, 'His disciples came during the night and stole him away while we were asleep.' If this report gets to the governor, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble." So the soldiers took the money and did as they were instructed. And this story has been widely circulated among the Jews to this very day."
V. Why does it matter?
A. It proves Jesus was the true Messiah.
B. It provides evidence and hope for our faith.
C. It empowers believers to share the truth that "He is Risen" with confidence and love.
